The Questions

Q

I am with a NJ museum which currently owns a 1880's PRR business car, 3999, which is in poor shape. Looking for any help in the area of information, drawings, people with interest in it, etc. We will be moving it indoors shortly and could use structural data before trying to make the move. Appears to be a converted coach based on the window style. Interior is very nice, exterior is a disaster. Any help at all is appreciated.

(Bill Strassner also replied with some detail: Sept.(?) 1968, Train #221, freight SWC-1, out of Waverly Yard right near LANE Tower.)

Q

Hi I am looking for all the history of the Rochester Branch of the Prr. It ran in NYS on the towpath of the Genesee ValleyCanal. Doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there on it. I have pics of the depots in Oramel and Caneadea and one scene with the water tower in it near Caneadea on Route 19. I think the depot is still standing and used for business in Cuba. Appreciate any dates or pics I can find, doing a small history of the area. Will share.

Service was discontinued in late 1962, the line abandoned in 1963 from Hinsdale to Wadsworth Jct. with the rest abandoned in phases by Penn Central by 1969. It opened in 1871 as successor to the canal.

Q

[I am] trying to research a steam locomotive. We were unable to find any reference to a Pennsylvania RR # 301. I believe this is correct as being the locomotive used in Lincoln's funeral procession. I became interested in finding the old pictures of this locomotive after I had the opportunity to ride as an assistant EMT on a movie set in our area. The engineer said that the locomotive is usually displayed at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD. I am not an experienced railroad buff but if you could direct me to any information on this locomotive I would greatly appreciate the assistance.

Q

I have a 65 page soft bound book titled "The Cars Of The Pennsylvania Railroad" published by Wayner Publications of New York, NY. No auther is listed but credits are given to a number of people on the first page. On page 40 is shown dynamometer car number 495591. Did the Pennsy have any other dyno cars? Are photographs out there of any others? Did they look the same?

In the early to mid 1970's, Hugh Jenkins operated his privately owned the PRR doodlebug (gas electric) #4666 on the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad. After Hugh's unfortunate passing, the 4666 was run on the Black River and Western near Flemmington NJ. I think it might still be there or they may know where it is. Many railfan photos were taken of it during the 1970's (I had the opportunity to operate it with Hugh several times just after replacing the gas engine with a diesel). Unfortunately, I lost all of my photos from my time on the NH&I. You may want to contact Carstens Publications via the Railfan web page to inquire about photos. If politely asked, they are very helpful in tracking such things down. Good luck in your search.

A B&W photo of a PRR McKeen railcar #4701 of 1910 appears in Edwin P. Alexander's book The Pennsylvania Railroad, A Pictorial History.

Q

I am trying to find out if the PRR ever used 2-4-2 Columbia locomotives, and I don't know where to look. I have a Lionel 027-gauge model of this loco with a PRR tender, and I'm wondering if its prototypical. Also, when, where, and how were these engines used by PRR?

Q

Did 1945-50 N5 cabin cars use Adlake Marker lamps? What are the three lens colors (facing front of train, side, and rear of train)?
