UKRAINIAN CHURCH MUSIC

BOOK

This is how a finished book appears.

Click on the thumbnail to see a larger version. Most images are in the 70K-100K range; they were taken by a digital camera but are not in perfect focus. When I get a chance, I will retake them.

The book is available for purchase. Please contact me at the address below.

The music is contained in a large binder. Cover pages are as shown here. The cover page image can be customized for your church and choir if an image is provided. Personal copies are labelled with the person's name; choir copies are labelled as "Xop" and a book number.
Here is a the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. The page serves as a good example of the typical appearance of music in this collection.

In the upper right of the page, you will note that the Great Ektenia is section 4 of the liturgy, and this is the first version of the Great Ektenia in this collection, thus: page 04-1. The choir quickly learns where sections end and flips to the next section automatically. The director need only indicate the version of the next item to be sung that Sunday.

Each section includes multiple versions of the liturgical score, by various composers. (Though certain sections only have one version at the moment, multiple versions will be appearing in the future.) Again, choosing a version is as simple as picking the number. Small spiral-bound booklets with a list of large version numbers are available.

Because much of choral music in our tradition was composed to be part of a larger work or to be sung at a concert, a multitude of keys is present. In order to prevent constant key changes, the keys of the various pieces have been changed, so much as possible, to either F/d or C/a. The original key is indicated on the score.

Items in the repertoire of a given choir that are not yet in this book can simply be added in the correct section and assigned a number. I will accept copies of your own choir's items that are not in this book, but I will not promise to transcribe them until after I exhaust my own collection, which will not be for another 2 or 3 years at the present rate.

In like manner, propers are extensively included. I have attempted to leave nothing to chance or to the thought that "everyone knows" what to do. For this reason, though it requires more pages, each variant has its own page and version number. The propers are not complete as yet, and work on these is continuing.
Because many choir directors are not professional dyaky (cantors), informational pages are provided for those sections of the liturgy that change. These pages are based on official church publications and rubrics and have been extensively reviewed by eparchial officials. Traditional usage and practice is emphasized throughout.
Updates When a reaonable number of additional pages have been created, these will be sent to purchasers of original copies for insertion into the binder.

Purchasing a Copy

Three versions are available, depending on your needs and desires:

Fully Assembled Version.

This version includes binders, dividers, and music, utilizing double-sided copying. Choral copies can include the instructional pages, or these can be omitted. Directors' copies always include these items. Cover pages are customized with your name, for personal copies, or are numbered, if for a choir. Cover pages will have a line drawing of St. Josaphat's (Parma) by default, but a drawing of your church can be substituted if you provide it.

Price: $40 + shipping

Unassembled Version.

This version includes music and cover pages only. Copying is double-sided. Get this version if you want to save on shipping costs and are willing to purchase binders and put the books together on your own. Instructions for binding will be provided.

Price: $15 initial copy, $10 subsequent copies, + shipping

Xeroxing Version.

This version includes music and cover pages only, but differs in that printing is on only 1 side of each page, and blank pages are inserted where needed to create an even number of pages. This version is intended for xeroxing on a professional xerox machine that recognizes (and does not copy) blank pages. Note, however, that many commercial copying companies will refuse to copy this music for you because of the copyright statement; you will have to do it yourself.

Price: $15 per copy, + shipping

Assembling Your Own Copy

  1. I recommend the following supplies. Approximate prices are shown.
    3-ring binder, Avery EZ-View 1-1/2 inch heavy duty 0 73333 79695 7 $7.00
Sheet lifter (in addition to the one provided) 0 73333 08179 4 $2.00
    Legal dividers 1-25, Avery 0 72782 11370 4 $5.50
    Legal dividers 26-50, Avery 0 72782 11372 4 $5.50
    Also consider: reinforcing strips, S P Richards 0 00055 00998 0
    Total $20.00
  2. The price may seem high, but these binders will last a long time, and the dividers are crucial in allowing the choir to go from section to section quickly, with a minimum of shuffling and rustling of sheets of paper. The dividers also allow you to paper-clip together pages not needed for a particular day: e.g. so that everyone turns right to all the -40 pages for the Christmas liturgy.
  3. Keep the Table of Contents tab, as this some material still in preparation will be placed there.
  4. Place each section of music behind its respective tab. For example, place Ton Despotin (02-1) behind tab 2, Mnohaya Lita (03-1) behind tab 3, Myrna Ekteniya (04-1) behind tab 4, and so forth.
