Problems viewing maps.

All of the maps on this site are OK. They have been tested and are known to load into image editing programs on both PCs and Unix workstations. There are no problems with file permissions, and their internal format is not corrupted.

You may run into problems if you have a lot of programs running, or if the programs that are running are consuming a lot of memory. The first step to take is to shut down all programs including your browser, then to restart your browser. This may help.

If you're still having problems, it is probably from what appears to be an internal limit of the browser. The limitation seems to be a maximum number of pixels in the horizontal direction. The limit for IE seems to be somewhere around 6500 pixels, the limit for Netscape around 8000-some. We don't know the exact number, and we don't know why the limit exists. However, to facilitate viewing, the diagrams have been cut into 2 or more pieces that your browser can digest.

We thought about scanning at a lower resolution. We tried that previously, but the maps could not be done their proper justice. This is a large project which is unlikely to be repeated. As such, we decided to do it right the first time. The computers can catch up. :-)

Problems printing maps

This one is a good bit more vexing. Here, the problem is well known, but the solution leaves something to be desired. Here is the most current information we have on the various programs out there. Those of you with access to or experience with other programs not listed here, please email me.

xv 3.10a (Unix shareware program)
Default behavior
To reduce the image so as to print it on 1 sheet of paper.
Overriding default behavior
No method found.
Accomplishing an identical copy
Manual cropping, then printing individual sections.

Paintbrush (Microsoft)
Default behavior
Image is printed on as many sheets of paper as required. BUT: image is larger than original when printed (by a factor of 2 or more).
Overriding default behavior
No method found.

Presentations 8 (Corel)
Crashed.

PowerPoint 97 (Microsoft)
Choked, but did not crash.

CorelDraw 7 (Corel)
Default behavior
Centers the imported gif image over a single sheet of "paper", and prints only that portion of the image. Image is printed at over 2 times its original size.
Overriding default behavior
No method found.
Accomplishing an identical copy
Scaling the image, then shifting portions of it onto the "sheet of paper" to print them.

LviewPro 1.B (?)
Default behavior
Fitting entire image on a single sheet of paper.
Overriding default behavior
No method found.

PageMaker (Adobe)
I hear this program could perform this task; unfortunately, it's not readily available to everyone.
