Main Line

Thanks to David Dawson for scanning the Logansport yard maps from his own collection. Some of these maps are rather faint. A rescanning may yet be accomplished; stay tuned. He also supplied the picture of the Logansport station.

For purposes of orientation, the reader may wish to consult my hand-drawn map of Logansport. The freight train schedules portion of this site also has a graphical representation of the comings and goings of scheduled PRR freight trains which may be of further interest.

Logansport Yard "A", Logansport, Ind.

2350x1225, 46K, ?? dpi

This yard is along the main line coming in from Columbus, southeast of town, and south of the Wabash River.

Logansport Yard "B", Logansport, Ind.

1174x603, 25K, ?? dpi

This yard is next into town along the main line, but after the main line has crossed over to the north side of the Wabash River. The north part of the yard abuts the Wabash main line.

Logansport Yard "C", Logansport, Ind.

2358x1216, 29K, ?? dpi

Past the center of town is this yard, which begins just west of the major PRR junction point, VAN.

Logansport Yard "X", Logansport, Ind.

1181x616, 17K, ?? dpi

The only yard not on the main line, this yard is north and east of VAN tower, on the stretch of track before the South Bend Branch and Logansport Branch part company.

Effner Branch

Diverges from the Columbus--Chicago main line at VAN and proceeds due west.

TRIMMER JCT. [??], Kenneth, Ind., M.P. ???

(In Ref 9, this was sheet 19.)

Divergence, northward, of an alternate approach to the Chicago main line. The Chicago Division maps (Ref 9) give this location as KENNETH in the index, but the index entry is crossed off.

In the index for the Chicago Division interlocking diagrams, reference 9, all entries for this branch (see below) are written in by hand. Essentially, this branch was transferred to the Chicago Division at the same time that a portion of the Panhandle main line was transferred out. (Can anyone confirm what the other division involved would have been -- Logansport Division?) It appears that the diagrams below did not get renumbered, but simply were added into the Chicago Division diagrams some time between 1947 and 1949.

MONTICELLO [??], Monticello, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 11, Sheet 10A, 1947; 2090x1136, 35K, 200 dpi

Crossing of the Effner Branch with the CI&L (Monon) ?main line/?branch. This same line crosses the PRR I&F branch at Frankfort.

REYNOLDS [??], Reynolds, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 44, 1950; 2079x1151, 26K, 200 dpi

Crossing of the PRR with the CI&L (Monon) main line from ?Michigan City to Louisville. The eponymous town of Monon is just north of this location. The same line crosses the PRR at Crawfordville (?Frankfort Branch), Limedale (St. Louis main), and Gosport (Vincennes Branch) before finally meeting the PRR again at New Albany, near Jeffersonville, Ind. / Louisville, Ky.

REMINGTON [??], Remington, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 45, 1949; 2150x1196, 31K, 200 dpi

Not much here besides a block station and sidings.

GOODLAND [??], Goodland, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 46, 19??; .x., .K, 200 dpi

KENTLAND [??], Kentland, Ind., M.P. ???

, , ; .x., .K, 200 dpi

The index entry for this map, which would have been sheet 47, was crossed off. The index entry was added by hand, while other, typed entries were crossed off: essentially, the Effner and South Bend branches were transferred to the Chicago Division and a portion of the Panhandle main line was transferred to another division, presumably Logansport Division.

, Effner, Ind., M.P. ???

Here Pennsy ownership ends (at the time of the map), and the rails become the property of the Toledo, Peoria & Western.

South Bend Branch

Diverges from the Panhandle's Columbus--Chicago main line at VAN and proceeds nearly directly north.

In the index, all entries for this branch are written in by hand. Essentially, this branch was transferred to the Chicago Division at the same time that a portion of the Panhandle main line was transferred out. (Can anyone confirm what the other division involved would have been -- Logansport Division?)

KEWANNA [??], Kewanna, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 48, 1949; 2125x1202, 39K, 200 dpi

The South Bend Branch crosses a C&O line from ... to .... To the west of here, the C&O line crosses the Panhandle main line at NORTH JUDSON).

DE LONG [??], De Long, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 49, 1949; 2144x1204, 47K, 200 dpi

The Erie RR main line from Marion and Lima, O. to Chicago is crossed.

Map notes: The derails on the South Bend Branch have "tails" on either side of them. These marks appeared intentional and were left intact. Does anyone know their significance? *** Above the text "4 one-way bolt locks", the text "2 two-way bolt locks" is erased. *** There is 3 lines of erased text under "Speed Limit", but only the first line ("Logan. Div'n", immediately left of "40 M.P.H.") can be made out.

HIBBARD [BI], Hibbard, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 50, 1949; 2158x1210, 43K, 200 dpi

The Nickel Plate main line from Fort Wayne to Chicago is crossed. In western Indiana, this same line closely parallels the PRR's Fort Wayne main line (Valparaiso to Hobart or thereabouts).

Map notes: There are several erasures, the main one being the connecting track from the PRR to the NKP, which started to the right of the text "S-231-C" and proceeded at a shallower angle, through the break in the line for "5338'". Farther along this same track, where the derail is shown, the track continued parallel to the NKP siding to the top edge of the diagram. On the left side of the map, a track came off the PRR under the "R" in "Logansport" and proceeded up, past a manual derail, then the trace is lost; another trace, possibly a continuation, extends to just below the "C" arm of the R1 signal, but I cannot be certain of a separate crossing of the NKP at this point. (Might it have crossed and joined in to the first-described erasure???)

Bob Albert notes that the diagram omits a stub track that was on the south side of the NKP/PRR interchange. He also questions the tower symbol (though it is, notably, missing the usual symbols indicating the operator and model board), stating that the interlocker was in the depot bay. The interlocking was automated in 1953, and the depot closed in 1957. [all, Bob Albert]

A blank-circle style symbol for a signal is erased; this is at and just above the train-order signals and would have controlled eastbound traffic on the NKP. Another such symbol, considerably fainter, can be seen underneath the L1 signal for westbound traffic. Finally, to the right of "S-231-C" there appears to be an upward pointing arrow, which may have referred to something previously at this location (a switch, perhaps, given the other erasures); or it may be simply a stray mark. This has been left in the drawing.

PLYMOUTH [??], Plymouth, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 51, 1949; 2170x1209, 65K, 200 dpi

The Fort Wayne main line is crossed, as is a Nickel Plate branch from Indianapolis to Michigan City. (WEST PLYMOUTH interlocking is also on the map but is present only on the Fort Wayne main line.)

Please see extensive notes on the Fort Wayne main page, as well as extensive map notes (and questions); both are too extensive to list here a second time.

LA PAZ JCT. [??], La Paz, Ind., M.P. ???

Ref 9, Sheet 52, 1949; 2128x1207, 53K, 200 dpi

The South Bend Branch crosses the B&O main line from Pittsburgh to Chicago.

Map notes: at the very bottom of the map, the eastward end of the siding south of B&O's #2 track has an open triangle and a mark that looks like the numeral "6". Can anyone confirm this?

LAKEVILLE [??], Lakeville, Ind., M.P. ???

, , ; .x., .K, 200 dpi

Crossing of a ?Wabash line. The index entry for this map, which would have been sheet 53, was crossed off.
