Notes

The first table on this page was authored by Richard F. Makse. I have done some minimal editing his notes and minor modifications of the HTML. The text of his table remains intact.

From the alphabetical version, I created the first column of the hierarchical version. The second column is based on a post of Drew McGhee to the PRR-Talk list.

The highest level is region, then Grand Division, then Division. So, we pick a date out of the hat and the best data I have is November 1, 1941 (good classic date, anyhow). Now, I'll be happy to fill in the division posts at a future date, but not tonight. That's a major undertaking in itself. I've attached an HTML table to make it a little easier for everyone to look at. Steal from it, modify it, cut it, paste it but do credit it.

Note that the railroads listed, while owned or partly owned by the Pennsy, probably rated inclusion in the divisional hierarchy because they each had superintendents--at least that is my conjecture. If anyone knows otherwise or can support that hypothesis, please let me know.

As info, the 1941 structure of divisions is vastly different from what existed in the early 20's. For example, there were Trenton, Richmond (Indiana), Elmira, Akron, Norfolk and even more different names. The consolidations and combinations that came about with Conrail, therefore, were just a few more notes on the same sheet of music. If someone were so inclined, they could trace division name changes through the Official Guide. Be aware, however, that the division names applied to operating divisions and corporate entities, such as prevailed in Lines West, did not necessarily have a relationship with how the PRR functionally ran.

According to PRR's form CT 1000 dated May 1, 1945, List of Stations and Sidings and Instructions for Making Reports to the Superintendent Car Service, these were the three regions and one zone the PRR had in place prior to the 1955 restructuring.

The ones marked [Note 1] are ones that I am not exactly sure how they fit within the region structure. I have put them under the region/zone they were listed with in the form CT 1000. If the PRR did not consider these 'divisions', than it's difficult to determine what are the 20 divisions. Based on the information I have available, this is my best educated, guess. According to Yanosey's Pennsy Diesel Years 5, until the 1955 restructuring, there were 3 regions and 19 divisions. By not counting the New York Zone as a 'region' this would make sense. According to Yanosey, these were the nine regions after the 1955 restructuring: New York, Philadelphia, Chesapeake, Northern, Pittsburgh, Lake, Buckeye, North Western, South Western.

Note 1:
Probably added to fill in the gap betweem Woodbridge Jct. and the north end of the Raritan River bridge.

Note 2:
These are obviously affiliated railroads, but how they fit into the regional or corporate structure of the PRR is not always clear. NY&LB and H&M were joint operations.

Note 3:
These divisions or railroads are not listed on Makse's table on the left.
